Export the first Excel sheet to CSV

Turn the first worksheet of an xlsx or xls file into CSV text, then use another tool if you need JSON.

ExcelCSVdata

Key takeaways

  • The page exports the first worksheet. There is no sheet picker on the tool.
  • Styles, charts, and later sheets stay in the workbook. JSON is a later CSV step, not this one.

Workflow

Save the workbook as xlsx or xls. If the rows you need are not on the first tab, move that tab to the front first. Upload the file in Excel to CSV and download the CSV named from the original file.

Open the CSV and confirm the header row plus one known value. When the next consumer wants JSON, send that CSV through CSV to JSON, then JSON Formatter. This step does not emit JSON.

Limits

The upload cap is 10 MB. Larger workbooks need a local export. Only the first sheet is read.

Dates and numbers follow the cell text or raw value stored in the sheet. Merged cells and styled headers do not become extra columns. An empty first sheet produces empty CSV.

What this tool does not do

It does not convert CSV back into Excel, and it does not export every sheet into one file.

It does not check column types. After CSV to JSON, JSON Validator can check structure. That check does not belong on the spreadsheet upload.

FAQ

How do I export the second sheet?

Move that sheet to the front in your spreadsheet app, save, and upload again. The tool page does not ask for a sheet index, so a workbook always yields its first sheet.

Will formulas stay as formulas?

You get CSV text of the cell values on that sheet, not a workbook. Formatting, charts, and the other sheets are absent. Check a few known cells before you treat the CSV as the source of truth.
